Animals Croatia

Helpful background, tips and explanations in detail.

Animals Croatia

The most symbolic animal of the island of Pag is undoubtedly the sheep. It shapes the landscape and is also the namesake of the former Black Sheep Festival at Zrce Beach.

In addition to the numerous sheep, there are also animals on the island of Pag that are rarely seen in Germany or Austria. On land, you often encounter small lizards or turtles. In the sea around Pag, there are even dolphins and whales, although they are very rarely seen. You have the most success in the water west of Novalja – on our party boat tours, we actually see dolphins regularly.

Of course, there are also some animals in Croatia that you should respect. On land, the snake species sand viper (Poskok) and common European adder are particularly noteworthy. Both are very shy and avoid contact with humans, but immediate medical assistance is required in the event of a bite. The “Black Widow” also occurs occasionally, but in the last 20 years, we have not been aware of a single case of a bite.

In the water, be careful of sea urchins, which like to stay on rocks. Stepping on a sea urchin is painful, so we recommend wearing water shoes at beaches outside of Zrce. Fortunately, there are no sea urchins at the party beach Zrce, and jellyfish have not been sighted there in recent years. While white sharks could theoretically get lost in the Mediterranean, a shark alert in Novalja or at Zrce Beach has never occurred.

Due to the hustle and bustle, most animals do not feel comfortable at the party beach. However, you can regularly observe small fish in the clear water at Zrce Beach.
