Rakija
Helpful background, tips and explanations in detail.
Rakija
Rakija is the general term for fruit brandies in Croatia and throughout Southeast Europe and is firmly part of the country's culture. In almost every bar and club in Novalja and at Zrce Beach, you can order Rakija – it is as common there as beer or wine.
The most famous variety is Šljivovica (Sliwowitz), a plum brandy that many vacationers already know. However, Rakija comes in numerous other varieties, depending on the fruit or ingredient:
Lozovača – grape brandy
Dunjevača – quince brandy
Kruškovača – pear brandy
Travariča – herbal Rakija
and many more
Traditionally, Rakija is often homemade and served to guests as a welcome drink. With an alcohol content of at least 37.5%, it packs a punch – tasting is part of the experience, but one should not overdo it.
Whether as an aperitif, after a hearty meal, or simply in the middle of a party night – Rakija is a true piece of Croatian lifestyle.
