Pag Cheese
Helpful background, tips and explanations in detail.
Pag Cheese
The Pag cheese (Paški sir) is the most famous and highly regarded sheep cheese in Croatia. It is produced exclusively on the island of Pag and is considered a culinary specialty of the country.
The milk from the sheep on Pag is particularly rich in minerals and salts. This is due to the fact that the animals graze on rocky pastures influenced by the salty sea breeze. This natural effect gives the Pag cheese its unique, intense flavor.
If you are traveling from Novalja towards Pag, you will pass a large cheese factory. Additionally, there are numerous small stalls along the road where locals offer sheep cheese, goat cheese, and homemade olive oil. A short stop is definitely worth it – whether to taste or to take a piece of this Croatian delicacy home.
