Wine Novalja
Helpful background, tips and explanations in detail.
Wine Novalja
The island of Pag has a long and rich wine culture. For many centuries, viticulture was one of the most important economic foundations of the region. Even today, individual vineyards and small wineries shape the landscape, although since the end of the 20th century, a large part of the areas had to give way to tourism. With the development of Novalja and the surrounding villages, about a third of the original vineyard areas disappeared.
Nevertheless, the island is still known for its wines. The indigenous varieties Gegic and Burin are particularly popular, characterized by their fruity, Mediterranean character. One of the most famous wine productions can be found in Stara Novalja, just a few minutes from Zrce Beach. Here, winemaker Boris Boskinac produces excellent red and white wines that enjoy regional recognition.
Those vacationing in Novalja do not have to look far: In the supermarkets and smaller shops of the city, you will find a wide selection of Croatian wines – from regional specialties to internationally known varieties. A glass of wine in the evening on the promenade or at sunset on Zrce Beach is an essential part of the holiday experience for many visitors.
